Lachen

Lachen is a small hamlet in North Sikkim district of the Indian state of Sikkim. It is a restricted and protected zone. Lachen is almost 135 Kms from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. Lachen mean a 'Big Pass'. Lachen is the base for Chopta Valley. Famous Green Lake Trek in Sikkim starts from Lachen. Lachen does have its own regulating systems known as 'Dzumsa'. Head of the Dzumsa is known as 'Pipon'.

Lachen is a less populated beautiful Himalayan destination known for the route to Gurudongmar Lake. Gurudongmar lake is the second highest lake in India after the Lake TsoLamu. Lake TsoLamu lies 5 Kms North of Gurudongmar Lake and is a protected zone and not permitted for tourists.

There is an age old monastery in Lachen known as Lachen Monastery. Most of the locals are of the Nyingma Sect of Tibetan Buddhism in Lachen. The area beyond Chopta Valley is restricted for foreigners (Non Indians). Indians need to obtain special permits to reach Lachen.
