Kalimpong - Enjoy Himalayan Tranquility

Kalimpong is a small Himalayan town located at the Mahabharat range of the Himalayas. Kalimpong is the headquarter of the Kalimpong subdivision of Darjeeling district. Kalimpong used to be the trade route between Tibet and India till Sino-Indian War in 1962. The town is a religious centre of Buddhism. The Gompa namely Zang Dhok Palri Phodang Monastery holds many scriptures of Buddhist literature.

Kalimpong is a major production centre of gladioli in India, and orchids, which are exported to many parts of the world. The Rishi Bankim Chandra Park is an ecological museum within Kalimpong.

  • Dr. Graham’s Home :
    Dr Graham's Homes is a school established in 1900 by the Scottish missionary Dr Anderson Graham for the destitute Eurasian children of the region. The beautiful school is spread over 500 acres and has separate cottages for the students, most of them built in the Scottish style, bakery, swimming pool, guest houses and much more. Tourists can spend hours exploring parts of the campus and talking to the friendly students and staffers of the school.
     
  • Army Golf Course : 
    The Army Golf Course in Kalimpong was built by the Army with a dual purpose of keeping the Army soldiers acclimatized for high-altitude soldiering as well as to provide a healthy leisurely sport for the Amy Personnel. Located enroute to the famous Durpin monastery this course is open to visitors (except foreigners). It is located at a elevation of about 4000 feet & makes for ideal golf as the mild weather conditions through most of the year make for a pleasant round of golf. It can get very cold in Dec /Jan though.
     
  • Mangal Dham :
    The Temple is situated about a Kilometer from the centre of the town and spreads over an area of 2 acres.
     
  • Deolo Hill :
    One of the numerous hill sightseeing destinations that warrant a visit. A picnic spot with a tourist lodge, run by the Department of Tourism. Offers an early morning view of the Kanchenjunga massif. Three water reservoirs, two of which serve as the primary drinking water source to the town are present atop this hill. The town of Kalimpong, the surrounding villages of Relli valley, Teesta River and its valleys all can be viewed from this point.
     
  • Flower Nurseries :
    There are numerous nurseries in Kalimpong, which excel in production of orchids. Travelers can visit some nurseries across the town and look at their collection of flowers, orchids and cacti etc. Kalimpong produces 80% of India’s gladiolas and is an important orchid – growing area. Some of the popular nurseries are - Bhushan Pradhan and Sons, Ganesh Mani Pradhan and Sons, Pine View Nurseries etc.
     
  • Durpin Hill :
    Durpin Hill or Durpin Dara is one of the two hills (the other being Deolo Hill) connected by a ridge on which the town of Kalimpong stands. The hill is 1,372 metres (4,501 feet) above mean sea level and is located south west of the town. The hill commands a panoramic view overlooking the town of Kalimpong, the snow clad Himalayan ranges of West Sikkim, the Teesta River and its valleys and the Jelepla Pass in the distance.
     
  • Kalimpong Monastery :
    Zang Dhok Palri Phodang is a Buddhist monastery in Kalimpong in West Bengal, India. The monastery is located atop Durpin Hill, one of the two hills of the town. It was consecrated in 1976 by the visiting Dalai Lama. The monastery houses many rare scriptures that were brought into India after the invasion of Tibet in 1959. It also houses the 108 volumes of the Kangyur.
